Norwich Airport is located to the north side of the city of Norwich, in the suburb of Hellesdon. Its early history saw it operating as RAF Horsham St. Faith during World War Two as a bomber station, latterly being used by the United States Army Air Force, before being returned to an RAF fighter station up until 1963.
Handed over to Norwich City and Norfolk County Council in 1967, commercial operations began to become more of a day-to-day function in 1988 when the new terminal building opened. 2012 saw Norwich Airport welcome just under than 397,000 passengers through its terminal, with nearly 40,000 aircraft movements.
Despite operating from a single runway, the airport is operated from by a number of well-known regional and European airlines. Arguably the busiest of these are Flybe, KLM, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways. However a presence is also maintained by Air Malta, BH Air, BMI Regional, Eastern Airways, Loganair, Freebird Airlines, Nouvelair and Germania. Between them, these airlines service a variety of destinations including Malta, Bulgaria, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Manchester, Jersey & Guernsey, Turkey, Amsterdam, Tunisia, Majorca, Tenerife, Corfu and Ibiza.
Norwich also holds a relatively unique position of being a major helicopter airport, servicing the North Sea oil platforms. Both Bond Offshore Helicopters and Bristow Helicopters operate from here and oil platform workers are a familiar sight in the airport terminal.
In 2005, Norwich Airport began a £3.5M terminal expansion leading to a fee being charged to all passengers departing the airport from 2007 onwards of £10.
Despite being located on the opposite side of the city to most approaching road links, the airport remains suitably easy to access via the A140 for taxis, chauffeurs and other vehicles. Normal journey time to Norwich is around 1 hour from Ipswich, Stowmarket, Bury St. Edmunds and Newmarket, extending to around 1 hour 15 minutes from the Cambridge area.
Drop-off at the terminal building is simplistic by way of a drop-off zone in the short stay car park immediately in front of the airport terminal, with arrivals being equally simple. From coming through into the arrivals hall, walking to the pick-up zone is no more than a 2 minute walk.
With more and more people choosing to use regional airports as a more local and convenient solution to flying, Alpha Executive Cars now provide airport transfers to Norwich on a more frequent basis than ever before.
